John is president and executive director for State Tax Solutions, LLC, a multistate consulting practice based in St. Louis, Missouri. Prior to founding this business venture, John was a senior manager and member of Ernst & Young’s Midwest Area State and Local Tax (SALT) Practice. In that capacity, he directed his area’s sales and use tax practice, focusing on clients with headquarters based in Missouri, Kansas, and Southern Illinois.

For more than eighteen years, John has developed broad experience in all areas of state and local taxation, but multistate sales and use tax remains his specialty. Among other things, he has assisted clients in handling state audits, managing large reverse audits with statistical sampling, developing tax-saving planning strategies, analyzing nexus activities, evaluating current compliance procedures, negotiating tax settlements, and providing representation in the form of written protests and appeals, letter ruling requests, and negotiations at administrative tax hearings.

He is a frequent lecturer on various sales and use tax issues, and his multistate tax articles have appeared in the Journal of State Taxation, Journal of Multistate Taxation, State Tax Notes, RIA State and Local Taxes Weekly, Software Taxation Letter, North Dakota Law Review, St. Louis Lawyer, and Missouri Taxation Law and Practice, a tax practitioner’s deskbook published by The Missouri Bar.

John received a B.S. degree in business administration from John Carroll University, majoring in both accounting and finance. He is both a Certified Public Accountant and a licensed attorney, receiving his J.D. degree from the University of Notre Dame. For his sales tax discipline, John earned the distinction of Certified Member of the Institute (CMI) with the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT). He is also a member of The Missouri Bar and the American Bar Association.
